Title: Base
Category: Inscriptions
Description: Inscribed statue base with dedication.
Besides the large piece of the long face, many small fragments were found built into the wall of the modern drain, including one bit with the letters "M H". One fragment also, was found in place to the west, thus preserving the full length.
When reconstructed, the base is Γ-shaped; both the long and the short exterior faces are finished; the ends and the interior faces are left rough. The top is finished with a claw hammer save for a relieving surface along edge. Simple mouldings along top and bottom; top, cyma reversa over ovolo; bottom, torus.
At the end of the long side, these mouldings carry around for a short distance beyond them the surface is rough, for setting into or against something. It therefore seems that the base must have occupied the interior corner of a room.
The portions found would have served as the facing for a poros core, and over both core and facing would have been laid a plinth, to serve as the statue base proper.
The facing block for the base of a statue (or group) dedicated to Demeter and Kore; and bearing the signature of Praxiteles.
On the right side dedication (one line), the name of dedicator (five lines) and the signature (one line).
Pentelic marble.

ADDENDA On the left side a large "Δ", the same size as the letters of the dedication.
