Two non-joining fragments, a preserving the shoulder, as well as the very low speira base. Fragment a is mended from many fragments, with the missing pieces restored in plaster and painted. [Object] A 3476: Statue Plinth

One corner hacked away by the house builder. From another corner of the same monument as plinth A 3475. In this case, however, the bedding for the foot extended into a second (missing) block. Socket for ... 2 September 1964 ... (Consider the possibility that this block and A 3476 come from the pedestal at the west end of the Middle Stoa, c. 1.30m. to N.E.). ADDENDA Comment by Homer A. ... Incidentally, at the short end of A 3476, Travlos shows a break between the socket and the face of the block (Hesperia 35, 1966, p. 147). In actuality, at the floor level of the socket, the floor continues out to the face of the block for a preserved width of 0.07m. before it is broken (see sketch); this continuation, which obviously was visible at the top of the fascia, is picked as is the rest of the floor."

[Object] A 958: Chimney Pot

Lid and about a quarter to a third of stand preserved; restored in plaster. This curious object consists of an umbrella-like cover, with a wide vertical rim which overhangs the bluntly conical stand attached ... 28 May-16 June 1938 ... No traces of smoke or burning. ADDENDA Fuller description of A 957 and A 958, with references (by A.W. ... Finally, the "lid" were it detachable (and doubtless it had a detachable prototype) would correspond exactly to ancient descriptions of the τηλια, the chimney-cover, which prevented Philocleon from escaping by the smoke hole (Aristophanes, Wasps, 147). Against this identification we must point out that there is no trace, inside or out, of discoloration by smoke or fire."

Complete. Corner block from the plinth of a large monument. Finished on two adjacent sides with a cyma reversa. In top a shallow bedding, apparently for a colossal left foot. Hard gray poros.
