Fills from construction and reconstruction of a house. "Brown House" = House A (RSY Hesp. 20) (and pit under Layer 4) in the industrial area west of the Areopagus.

Under the original floor of this house were sherds including two red figured pieces (P 17137, P 19880). The filling of the floor levels of the house after its plan was changed and it was reconstructed yielded fragments of various coarse amphoras and black glazed table ware; four sherds incised with the letter kappa suggest that this is the initial of the owner of the house of the second period.

In addition to P 18556 and P 18605, it produced 28 loomweights, a combination which suggests that some of the dowry of the lady of the house was thrown into the well. |

... The pyre came to light just below the surface of layer 4, with the pit going down into layer 5, the floor associated with phase 3 of the house. Layer 4 ran over the foundation of the wall between rooms 5 and 6; a layer of decayed mudbrick covered layer 4. The pyre seems to have been dug into layer 4, which was then patched and continued in use. A new floor was not laid, however, so the pyre may have been buried between the abandonment of the house and its collapse. |
